One of the best books I've read this year. I'm strong enough to accept my idiocy for reading this book late. I have read some books from this author - the Last Call series. And I never doubt that this series will be great as well.
Alex is a great hockey player. But he has a reputation of being the MVP or Most Valuable Prick. He does his job playing hockey, giving assists and sending the puck into the net to win their team. But beyond that, he doesn't give a damn what everyone thinks. And there was a reason why he acts what people thinks and not who he really is. The last stunt that Alex did, his presence was called for by the higher ranks of the company/team owner and needs to be fix. Quick!
Sutton is a social worker/counselor and is used to dealing with difficult people. Because of her experience in the past, she has a soft heart for troubled kids. And working in a government and their fund is not that great. So when she was partnered with Alex as a representative of Cold Fury team, she was beyond excited that through the company's help they can do outreach awareness to different schools.
Their first meeting didn't go well. First, Alex was late. Second, Alex thought Sutton was a guy so when he found this beautiful, sexy and hot receptionist, he never hesitates to flirt and ask her for dinner. Never did he know that that woman is Sutton herself. They discuss this and that about their project but it seems that Alex is really hesitant at first. Because of his upbringing, he doesn't like being told to do this and that and he just lashed out onto Sutton. And since Sutton is used this kind of attitude she is just calm and didn't react differently. She knew that there was something about Alex that made him talk, act like this. And because of this, Alex finds Sutton different and intriguing.
Since they were working together, Sutton feels the need to understand hockey. She didn't know anything about the sport at all. So from sending tickets to Cold Fury's home game to talking late night when the team is playing out of town, Alex and Sutton develop feelings toward each other. But Sutton is hesitant because they will be working together and doesn't want to cross that line but their attraction and chemistry are just unstoppable and undeniable.
When they were finally together, everything is explosive and great. Sutton discovered the new side of Alex. And it seems that Alex was mellowed down being with Sutton. He tends to open up things to her that he kept secret for a long time. Because of her, he slowly appreciates the sport that he used to hate. Until everything was just moving into a warp speed and he can't understand how to control his feelings. He was afraid and he doesn't know what to do about it so he went back to the safety world he knew.
This book is really great read (for me anyway). I have a different way of reading my books so I guess when I put my mind into it, I ended up loving the book. Alex is a grouchy, hot-headed and just have this "I-Don't-Care-About-You" attitude that is until Sutton. Because of his upbringing love is new to him. Sutton in the other hand, is sweet, smart and soft hearted yet strong. Though they almost have the same experience in their childhood, Sutton has a strong foundation while Alex holds on to his past. Sutton accepted it and make a positive out of it while Alex keeps it, lived with it and fueled his hatred.
I wanna strangle Sutton for being too understanding but I guess as a counselor she should be. She tends to see the positive side of Alex even if he was an idiot. But I love what Alex did to win her back. I think, of all the books that I have read, it was the most romantic way a guy did to win the girl back.
This book is definitely a SEXY, sweet and heartfelt read. There was a little bit of angst especially in Alex's past but beyond that everything in this book was great. The lead characters, Sutton's family and of course Garrett.
I would highly recommend this book and this author.
